Display science

Calculations are not measurements.

Red Light Display controls the color and timing of a Mac screen. No clinical benefits have been established for this app.

Color and spectrum are different.

Maximum Red requests the Display P3 red primary, with chromaticity coordinates x = 0.680, y = 0.320. The published 614.9 nm dominant-wavelength description is a colorimetric descriptor, not a measured emission peak. A display’s actual spectrum depends on its hardware. The app cannot turn a screen into a 660 nm LED or add an 850 nm near-infrared emitter.

An illustrative output model

Example XDR model, calculated and not measured: approximately 0.2–0.3 mW/cm² at the glass in SDR, 0.11 mW/cm² at 6 inches, and 0.05 mW/cm² at 30 cm. A 15-minute example at 6 inches is approximately 0.10 J/cm².

These estimates assume an example XDR display, its published white luminance, the red primary’s share of that luminance, an assumed emission spectrum, and a rectangular-panel distance model. Your screen, brightness, display settings, angle, and viewing distance change the result. They are not calibrated measurements of your Mac or a prescribed dose.

Energy per area is irradiance multiplied by time. For example, 0.11 mW/cm² × 900 seconds ÷ 1000 ≈ 0.10 J/cm². A timer alone cannot establish equivalent exposure to a dedicated panel. The app’s research reference values are for comparison, not a prescribed dose.

Display Boost

Pro can request extra HDR range on supported XDR displays. The reported range is a system value, not an irradiance measurement. Actual output and any increase must be measured on the specific display under the conditions of use.

What remains unproven

  • The spectrum and delivered energy from this app on each supported display.
  • Any clinical benefit, therapeutic dose, or equivalent coverage versus a dedicated panel.
  • Equivalent outcomes, safety, or output compared with a dedicated light device.
